“Not every classroom has four walls”
Teaching children to live in the wilderness is essential. It is a necessity and not just an option. Especially in today’s world, when we are completely losing touch with our roots and reality. It is important that our children learn to be free, explore their surroundings and stay grounded at the same time. Outdoor education is a great way of doing that in a fun and exciting manner.
It will not only make them independent, smart and physically fit, but also realize them the value and importance of nature and natural resources.
Today’s child is being exposed to new technologies every moment. There are a hundred distractions because of social media and the pressing undying urge to be cool.
What our kids need to learn is that there is a real world outside of their smartphones and tablets- the rough and tough world of wilderness and survival that is not only fun to explore but a life changing experience, which is bound to change their outlook and shape their personality.
A camping experience for children can be either:
Hardcore Jungle Camping – will include self-cooking of all meals and living in self-pitched tents and shelters and lots of trekking.
Comfortable Camping in Luxury Tents-which nevertheless will include the same activities and learning except that with a bit more comfort.
DEPENDING UPON THE AGE GROUP AND NATURE OF PROGRAM, ANY KIND OF CAMPING CAN BE DONE!
THE FOLLOWING ARE THE ACTIVITIES WE OFFER BASED ON WHICH PROGRAMS CAN BE CREATED*TEAM DIVISION:
JUST LIKE INDIVIDUAL GROWTH OF THE CHILD IS OUR FOCUS, LEARNING TO WORK IN TEAM IS ALSO OF PRIME IMPORTANCE IN A CAMPING SCENARIO
A camp has to begin with team division.
To make it more appealing for children they are asked to come up with cool team names and slogans and paint their very own team flags!
ROCK CRAFT– this is the name we have given to our main adventure activities that include
- Rock climbing -climbing up a mountain or artificial set up
- Rappelling –coming down from mountain or artificial set up
- Obstacle Courses – An obstacle course is a structure built via ropes and knots that you have to either climb or walk on. Depending on the height of the setup, it falls under either a “high rope course” or a “low rope course”.
This also determines whether safety equipment and gear is going to be required or not. Although no matter what the height of the course is there will always be “spotters” or “helpers” while the activity is being conducted.
(All activities are executed and supervised by trained mountaineers and outdoor professionals.)
RISE AND SHINE
The camp will always begin with a rise and shine session where kids participate in warm up sessions, fun games and exercises every morning.
The idea is to make the kids understand the importance of waking up on time, following a schedule and getting acclimatized to a new environment and temperature.
This also works as an interactive session that helps kids bond with each other and the trainers.
ENERGISERS AND ICE BREAKERS
Time and again, the instructors are going to indulge in fun energizing activities, camp songs, dances and ice breakers to make kids comfortable with themselves. These also help in making the kids step out of their shells and be more confident in speaking out, communicating, performing and playing with each other and with the trainers.
These instill in children a feeling of unity and are especially helpful in making the shy and introverted children feel more part of the group and comfortable in their skin.
The most important function of ice breakers and energizers is to make the camp leaders or trainers stand out and perform for the kids and execute games. This way the children get to understand their trainer, his/her qualities and nature and will gradually get more familiar.
Sometimes what kids want is a break from physically challenging activities as well as the learning, so this is when we engage them in completely high on energy, competitive and fun games like-
- Fill the bucket- children get in teams and fill water in a bucket by passing water in their hands.
- Burst the Balloon- Blowing and Sitting on Balloons.
- Gone in sixty seconds- In this fun game every child gets sixty seconds to finish a fun task, like gather balls or create a house from blocks.
- Capture the Flag- field game.
- Air Hoopei- field game.
- And many more
EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING GAMES
No matter what a game or task is, there is enough learning that one can derive from it. This is called experiential learning. When children gather in teams, work together and finish a task they are assigning to each other and to themselves, they play different roles and learn team work. They are also building better communication and learning about leadership. There is a whole set of fun and interesting tasks and games that are designed by experts especially for this purpose.
- Perfect Square- create a perfect square with a rope while the entire team is blindfolded.
- Pipes and Marbles- the team comes together and transfers marbles in a container via pipes.
- Trust Fall- do we trust each other to simply fall on each other?
- Spider Web- every member has to pass from a narrow cavity within a setup made via rope without touching the ropes.
- And many more.
Team Work: the one thing that children learn is how difficult it is to manage everyone in a team, how everyone has a different opinion but how every opinion should be heard.
Participation: they learn the importance of participation and contribution.
Conflict Management: These kinds of games teach kids that conflicts arise whenever a bunch of people have to finish a task. So they learn to solve it and focus on the objective.
Task Allocation: Children learn how important it is to divide roles and responsibility.
Leadership: Leadership in itself is a major quality where student realize their potential as a leader, the importance of leadership in a task, the duties and qualities of a good leader.
Communication: Children will understand how important it is to communicate in the right manner and how essential good communication is for a team to perform its tasks.
All these learning can be correlated with their experiences in everyday life and in school
Camping is incomplete without trekking. Children will learn the importance and benefits of trekking and how to enjoy the process of hiking and not just focus upon reaching.
TREKKING INCLUDES MANY LESSONS AND SESSIONS LIKE:
- Walking manners and mountain etiquettes
- Thumb rules of trekking
- Route navigation
- Map reading
- Leave No Trace- no littering while trekking and camping
- Identifying danger
CAMPING AND TENT PITCHING
Another extremely essential session is tent pitching. Children will learn to
- Identify a good flat surface for pitching tent (dome tents)
- Making temporary shelter from leaves twigs and tarp
- Un-pitching a tent properly
- Where not to pitch tents
This is an essential part of camping and also includes evacuation techniques and drills. The kids will learn:
- DR. ABCD
- Basic camp injuries and treatments
- How to prepare a first aid kit for camp
- Improvised stretcher
- Improvised Crutch
- Evacuation drill in case of emergency
- Emergency sigs and distress signals
One of kids’ absolute favorites, this includes cooking their own meal and kids will do everything from carrying their ration to getting water and cooking the food
- How to light a firewood or a Chulha
- How to barbeque or roast vegetables
- Washing and cleaning the cooking space
The absolute favorite of adults and kids both, it is a truly delightful experience to identify and spot stars and constellations and even galaxies at times.
A short night hike is followed by an astronomy session with experts.
It is really important that the kids of the city learn about the village life as well. Moreover, every city child is curious about the life in villages.
This is an amazing activity in which children will prepare questionnaires and then will set out in teams and interview the village folks.
The kids get their questions answered by the village people and they also get a sneak peek into the daily life of inhabitants.
Compassion is best learnt while camping.
We have amazing programs where children can volunteer to do either of these:
- Paint a village school
- Donate clothes or stationary
- Prepare a meal for school kids
- Conduct an educational workshop on any one topic for villagers
- Perform for the village kids
It is a great idea to introduce children to outdoors and villages and rural life! But it is even
better, if they get to do their bit in making the outdoors even better. It is indeed great to not litter but a greater thing is to pick someone else’s trash.
In a cleaning drive children are provided with face masks and gloves and trash bags
RECYCLE AND WASTE MANAGEMENT
Very closely related to this is recycling and waste management. Before the cleanliness drive, the children learn to classify waste and trash the trash accordingly.
In recycling session, kids are going to get some things from which they will create beautiful and useful items.
- Newspaper dresses
- Bracelets from rubber bands
- Decorative stuff etc.
A Session on the principles of Leave no trace
- Travel and camp on a durable surface
- Minimize campfire impact
- Leave What you Find
- Dispose of waste properly
- Respect other visitors
This will be followed by a short skit performance – The teams will perform a skit related with the fundamental principles of camping. A prop box will be given to each team and they can improvise and act accordingly! There is no better way of imbibing a value than to first act it out!
This is the interactive activity with the instructors at the end of the day, where children share their learning and highlights with their trainers.
The trainers will also share their observations and suggestions. The trainers might give out appreciation badges to the best performers of the day and children who stand out in anyway.
TALENT SHOW AND OPEN MIC
The whole idea of camping is to make a child more confident. The kids will definitely engage in physically exhausting adventure activities in the daytime. So the evenings are going to be for music, dance and singing.
The idea is to encourage children to share their talent in public without hesitation. It is especially important that every child gets a chance to express him or herself.
The open mic session likewise will enable them to speak their minds out on any relevant topic either about the camp or otherwise.
THE MEGA CHALLENGE!
All the excitement and fun will come together in the last day of the camp when the abilities and learning of all teams will be put to test.
The mega challenge will include various tasks learnt in the course of the camp and some fun games and the team finishing first will be the winner!
Since it is a competition between all teams it surely is the most awaited part of the camp!
- Stretcher making and evacuation
- Tent pitching
- Engineering challenge- make a functional self-standing catapult with apparatus provided
- Treasure Hunt and Navigation
- Maggie Cookout!
Wall of Fame
Kids love to paint and draw and there is really no better creative outlet for young minds than to give them a space to pour their imagination and heart out!
Last but not the least is the painting and drawing activity. Children are given chart papers and colors and they can let their creative juices flow!
They can share about their experience or leave a message or just make anything they want.
These creative drawings and messages will be then hung on the wall of fame of the camp in front of which the entire group will take a picture!
